It is onlyknown in the southern parts of Britainas a winter visitant; and -it is at thattime gregarious and frequently taken, incompany with other species, by bird-catchers, by whom it is called the StoneRedpoll. In the northern counties ofEngland and in Scotland and its isles, itis resident throughout the year. It re-tires during the summer to the under-wood that covers the bases of many ofour mountains and hills and that oftenfringes the banks of their precipitousstreams; in which sequested situations itbreeds. The nest is built in a bush orlow tree, of moss and the stalks of drygrass intermixed with down from thecatkin of the willow, which also formsthe lining and renders it a particularlysoft and warm receptacle for the eggsand young. Some ofthem are, the Redpoll Linnet, the Red-capped Chippy, the Dusky Redpoll andSnowbird. Its habits are similar tothose of the goldfinch. Its note is ut-tered while flying. The Redpoll is easily tamed and hasbeen taught to perform tricks. Mr. Langille writes of an interesting in-stance, that came under his observation,of several Redpolls in captivity. Hesays: One had a soft belt around hisbody, mider his wings, to which wasfastened a small chain and a bucketabout as big as a thimble, with whichhe drew water out of a deep dish anddrank.
