gave them theirliberty, and went back to planting hiscrop in the distant field, where he foundBig Tom happy with his party of youngadventurers. Big Tom never allowed one turkeychick to return night or day to its coopor its mother. In the fall, the farmerand his boys counted twenty-seven wellgrown turkeys perched on the fence backof the barn, with his majesty, theirfather, half way down the hne, wherehis eyes could take in all their doings. The hen turkeys had gone about theirown work, raised other broods andbrought them up in coops with variouslosses, but Big Tom of the red wattleshas always been celebrated in that local-ity from that year down to the presentdate as the best manager of a turkeyranch ever known. At Thanksgiving time Big Toms goodqualities were enumerated by a largeparty gathered at the farmers table, andif his majesty could have heard the flat-tering remarks his pride would have per-haps caused him to give back an answer-ing gobble-obble-obble. The Varied Thrush is one of the mostbeautiful members of the family ofthrushes. Its range is somewhat limitedas it frequents only the coastal regionsof the northwestern part of North Amer-ica. In winter, however, it may be foundin California and is occasionall) seen asfar south as Lower California. As astraggler, it is sometimes noticed in theNew England states. Mr. Mitchell says that the VariedThrush reaches the Columbia river in itssouthward flight some time in October. He also states that *at this time they flitthrough the forests in small flocks, usu-ally frequenting the low trees, on whichthey perch in perfect silence and are attimes very timorous and diflicult to ap-proach, having all the sly sagacity of therobin. In fact this bird, which is oftencalled the Western Robin, is not onlymuch more shy and retiring than ourwell known
