a round dozen of earth wormsinside of ten minutes. One day a fledgling was hopping acrossthe lawn, the mother bird alert andwatchful, not far awav. She had beenfeeding it, but evidently its hunger hadnot yet been appeased, for it hopped toher side and began to make the coaxingnoise heard when in the nest as the par-ent approaches with food. The motherbird paused a moment, looked about her,then hopping to one side a short dis-tance, she planted her feet squarely uponthe ground, caught one end of a wormin her beak and commenced to pull. Theworm, which was a large one, was noteasily dislodged and tug as hard as shecould, she could not complete her cap-ture. Evidently the worm was too long.She fairly tipped over backward in hereflfort, yet without avail. All at once,and as quick as a flash, so as to give itno chance to get away, she let go herhold and seizing the worm farther down,drew it triumphantly forth and gave itto her expectant offspring. E. THE CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW. (Antrostomus carotinensis.) In the wooded ravines and timberedswamps of the southern states, theChuck-wills-widow tells of its pres-ence by frequently calling its ownname. It^ with the whip-poor-willand the night hawk, belongs to thefamily of goatsuckers and is closelyrelated to the swifts. The familyincludes about eighty-five species ofthese peculiar birds, nearly all being na-tives of the tropics, though nearly everypart of the world has representatives.The range of the Chuck-wills-widow isquite limited. It includes the states fromVirginia and southern Illinois southwardto the Gulf of Mexico, and through Mex-ico into Central America. It is alsofound in Cuba. Chuck-wills-widow is a bird of thetwilight and night hours. Silent duringthe daylight hours, its penetrating voice,which is remarkably strong, may be con-tinuously heard in the regions that it in-habits during the evening hours and fora time preceding the returning light ofday.
