o this bird is that the femaleis said to be larger and braver than themale. A story is told of a pair of eagles inthe New York Zoological Park whomade a nest in the root of a tree, in acavity of the ground and lined it withmoss. As no eggs were yet ready thebirds brought a smooth round stone tothe nest on which they sat, male and fe-male, on alternate days. Some suchhabit as this may. account for the ideaof the ancients that the eagle carriedstones to her nest to facilitate the layingof her eggs. The eagle lives to be very old. It isnot especially difficult to tame. A youngone caught in the Territory could not bebought. The Indian woman who wastaming it refused all offers. She said,Ah-cha-fa-tona wants young eagle, shenot want w^iite mans money! Old Abe—named for Lincoln—wascaught and tamed by soldiers during thecivil war. He went through the wardelighted with battles. One of his feath-ers, dropped on the battlefield, wasframed and now hangs in Washington.Belle Paxson Drury. 164 I

THE BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER. (Charadritcs squatarola.) The Black-bellied Plo\^er is quite cos-mopolitan, though its range is practicallyconfined to the northern hemisphere, passing southward in the winter to theWest Indies and northern South Americaand breeding in the far North. Notonly is its range extensive, but also itslist of common or local names. Some ofthe better known of these are Whistling-Field Plover, May Cock, Beetle-head,Black-breast and Bottle-head. Its largehead has given it the name Bull-head andits large, brilliant and expressive darkcolored eyes, which in summer are sur-rounded by a white ring, have led someof its admirers to call it the Ox-eve. The Black-bellied Plover is grouse-likein appearance and differs from all theother plovers in having a rudimentaryhind toe. It varies greatly in the color ofits plumage, both with age and with theseasons. As it stands upon the beach, decked in its summer plumage, it is astriking and beautiful bird. As winterapproaches its plumage
