re needed at the south. May God speedtheir journey. But some of us must remain or shirkoar duty. The Turkey Buzzards andtheir helpers must be here to clean upthe fields and groves and to clear awaydead things washed ashore. If thesethings are not done the foul air nextspring may make much sickness. Wood-peckers must keep at their work or plantswill suffer next summer. Those whocan eat seeds must be active or the farm-ers will not be able to keep down theweeds. Grouse, Jay, Wax Wing andothers who can manage berries and nutsmust not leave or in a few years treesand underbrush will be so thick that therewill not be room for them to branch out.Even our hated Mr. English Sparrow isneeded to pick up droppings in the streetand waste around houses. We are allneeded—each to do his own bit of workin his own place and way. Although thatmay not be just what we prefer, may weall do our duty just as cheerfully asmans friend, Mr. Turkey Buzzard, doeshis unpleasant tasks. LOVEDAY ALMIRA NELSON. 152

Instead of the field itseems to prefer the pasture, with itsweeds and bushes. It will also frequentthe shrubby thickets that follow the re-moval of a forest. This shy bird has asomewhat extensive range, which in-cludes the eastern United States andSouthern Canada. It passes the wintermonths chiefly in those states south ofthe Ohio river. The
