At least this istrue in the great majority of tests. Asin the case of hot-house flowers, no fertileseed is set when nets keep away thelaurels benefactors. Many of our readers reside near thehome of the Mountain Laurel and canexamine the interesting features of thisbeautiful plant in Natures own garden.Those that do this will be well repaid. The hop plant is a creeping perennialwith several stems or branches attaininga length of fifteen to twenty-five feet. Ithas numerous opposite three to fivelobed, palmately veined, coarsely toothedleaves with long leaf stalks (petioles).Flowers unisexual, that is staminate andpistillate flowers separate, either on sep-arate plants (dioecious) or upon differentbranches of the same plant (monoecious).Flowers insignificant in loose, droopingaxillary panicles. Fruit a cone-like catkinusually designated a strobile. The hop has been called the northernvine. It is found in a wild state through-out Europe, excepting the extreme north,and extends east to the Caucasus andthrough central Asia.
