surviving as the duck with powerfulwings. Who are the opponents of the doctrineof Evolution? In the scientific worldthey are difficult to find. Professor Vir-chow, of Berlin, the distinguished pathol-ogist must, I think, be classed as one, al-though his verdict is really not proven.Professor Haeckel, however, has pointedout that the opinion of a pathologist, nomatter how eminent, upon the subject ofevolution cannot carry much weight. Our illustration- is that of a male bird. The female is a sooty brown, silvery graybelow and with much white on the sidesof the head. Immense flocks of the young of thisspecies winter on San Diego Bay, Cali-fornia. Here the adult birds are of ratherrare occurrence for they are able to with-stand the rigors of an arctic winter andstay far to the northward where they area common resident.
