As arule, plants have the stamens andpistils in the same blossom or part inone and part in another. The May-flower, however, does not carry out thisarrangement. Either the anthers orthe stigmas are abortive or partiallyso, or in other words, the perfect stig-mas are usually associated with abor-tive anthers and vice versa. In thismanner, nature has wisely provided forcross fertilization which is accomplishedlargely by insects, as the structure ofthe plant is not adapted to wind fer-tilization. The chosen agents for thisprocess are honey bees, and a few earlymoths and butterflies, to which thenectar is served by this beautiful Hebeof the spring and who carry the pollenfrom one flower to another. A wise provision of nature has beenpointed out whereby ants are kept awayfrom the nectar which they would de-vour without accomplishing the pur-poses for which it was created. Every 228
