rican, ex-cept that it is =omewhat smaller andits fur is coarser. Upon a large farm in Michigan vis-ited by the writer this summer ran acreek where the chickens, when thetrough was dry—and dry it usually was—traveled to get a drink. In the bankof the creek a mink made his home, and not a week passed that one or morehens did not appear in the barnyardcrippled or mangled in a manner pain-ful to behold—painful, that is, to thevisitor, but not apparently to the farm-er, who only said: Its that darnedmink; some day, when I have time, Illset a trap and catch him, and so wentcoolly on his way, leaving the poormaimed creatures to drag out a painfulexistence for days or weeks, hopingthat nature would heal the woundsmade by the mink. Thecultivation of his fields left no timefor cultivating the finer feelings of theheart. 74

Eventhe country boy has less regard for thegun. The game and many of the birdsand animals that are not game havebeen killed off, so that country boysnow wish to give them a chance fortheir lives. Probably the worst mur-derers of songsters and innocent ani-mals are the ignorant city youths whoget only a day or two in the woods in ayear. Guns have been improved to suchan extent that whether the gunnerhas any skill or not everything insight can be killed because of therapidity of fire and the number ofchances for killing. A gun has beeninvented which pours a steady streamof rapid
