179 THE PRONG HORNED ANTELOPE. (Anti/ocap7-a Americana.) The antelope family comprises many ofthe most beautiful and graceful speciesamong horned animals. AA/hen we be-hold the curiously twisted horns of thesasin, the long, sharp horns of the pas-san, the large, spiral horns of the koodooand the shorter horns of the eland, not tomention the graceful bodies and limbsof these animals, we are led to wonder atthe extravagance of nature in furnishingsuch a variety of appendages to thesecreatures. By far the larger number of species ofthis family live in Africa and Asia, wherethey have reached the highest develop-ment of structure. They are not, likesome families of mammas, confined toany one particular locality, but arefound on the plains and high up on themountains; in a country sparsely coveredwith vegetation and in the thick forests;in marshes and bogs.
