k inthe water, the entire operation not last-ing over twenty minutes. This methodis different from that of our other landturtles. Nothing but sand will suitthe purpose of the snapping-turtle.In order to find a suitable spot for theburial of her eggs, the female is oftenforced to traverse a considerable dis-tance. The sand must be quite dryand exposed to the full rays of the sun.The little ones are hatched in July. The young run by instinct into thewater. Remarkable stories are told of thelongevity of the turtle and of its ten-acity of life. That they live to near acentury is well authenticated. Afterthe head is severed from the body thehead will open and shut the mouth androll the eyes. In one case a stick washeld between the open jaws, whichclosed upon it with violence, and kepthold of it. Meanwhile the headlessbody was crawling on the ground. An allied form (MatrocJielys lacer-tina) inhabits the tributaries of theMexican Gulf, extending northward inthe Mississippi as far as Missouri.

I have been ill many months, andmy family and friends have done allthey could to make the dajs pass asquickly as possible for me. Early inJune my mother found a little brownbird which could not have been morethan two weeks old. Thinking itmight amuse me she brought him upstairs done up in her handkerchief, andI took him inside the bed. After anhour he seemed very happy and not atall afraid. I looked him over care-fully, but found him uninjured. I tookhim to the open window expecting to
