week orten days to build it. They fasten both ends of astring to the twigs betweenwhich the nest is to hang. Afterfastening many strings like this,so as to cross one another, they weave in other stringscrosswise, and this makes a sortof bag or pouch. Then they putin the lining. Of course, it swings and rockswhen the wind blows, and whata nice cradle it must be for thebaby Orioles ? Orioles like to visit orchardsand eat the bugs, beetles andcaterpillars that injure the treesand fruit. There are few birds who domore good in this way thanOrioles. Sometimes they eat grapesfrom the vines and peck at fruiton the trees. It is usually be-cause they want a drink thatthey do this. One good man who had alarge orchard and vineyardplaced pans of water in dif-ferent places. Not only theOrioles, but other birds, wouldgo to the pan for a drink, insteadof pecking at the fruit. Let usthink of this, and when we havea chance, give the birds a drinkof water. They will repay uswith their sweetest songs. 206

From col. F. M. Woodruff. BALTIMORE ORIOLE. THE SNOWY OWL. ^EW of all the groups of birdshave such decided markings, such characteristic distinctions,as the Owl. There is a singu-lar resemblance between the face of anOwl and that of a cat, which is themore notable, as both of these crea-tures have much the same habits, liveon the same prey, and are evidentlyrepresentatives of the same idea intheir different classes. The Owl, infact, is a winged cat, just as the cat isa furred owl. The Snowy Owl is one of the hand-somest of this group, not so much onaccount of its size, which is consider-able, as by reason of the beautifulwhite mantle which it wears, and thelarge orange eyeballs that shine withthe lustre of a topaz set among thesnowy plumage. It is a native of the north of Europeand America, but is also found in themore northern parts of England, beingseen, though rather a scarce bird, inthe Shetland and Orkney Islands, where it builds its nest and rears itsyoung. One will be more likely
