hard to find.If I tell you where it is, youwill not take the eggs, will you?It is in a hollow limb of a veryhigh tree. I am very fond of fruit, andfor this reason the people on theplantations do not like me verywell. I can fly very fast, but I can-not get along so well on theground. I keep my feet farapart and hop. I like to sit in the top of thetallest trees. Then I am notafraid. Nothing can reach methere but a rifle ball. I do not like the owl, he is sougly. When we find an owl weget in a circle around him andsnap our great beaks, and jerkour tails up and down andscream. He is very much afraidof us. The people where I live likeour yellow breasts. They wearthem on their heads, and alsoput them on the ends of theirbows. We sometimes sit together ina tree and snap our beaks andshout. This is why we havebeen called u Preacher Birds. We can scream so loud that wemay be heard a mile away. Oursong is u Tucano ! Tucano ! I think it is a pretty song, butthe people do not like it verymuch. 29

YELLOW THROATED TOUCAN. Vi Liie-size. THE YELLOW THROATED TOUCAN. (^ HE Toucans are a numerous 4 race of South American birds, oj at once recognizable by the ~~^ prodigious size of their beaksand by the richness of their plumage. These birds are very common, saysPrince Von Wied, in all parts of theextrensive forests of the Brazils andare killed for the table in largenumbers during the cool seasons.Their eggs are deposited in the hollowlimbs and holes of the colossal trees, socommon in the tropical forests, buttheir nests are very difficult to find. The Qgg is said to be white. They arevery fond of fruit, oranges, guavas andplantains, and when these fruits areripe make sad havoc among the neigh-boring plantations. In return forthese depredations the planter eatstheir flesh, which is very delicate. The flight of these birds is easy andgraceful, sweeping with facility overthe loftiest trees of their native forests, their strangely developed bills beingno encumbrance to them, replete asthey
