He has not been so com-mon for a year or two as he wasformerly, for the reason that theRobins died by thousands of starvation,owing to the freezing of their foodsupply in Tennessee during the pro-tracted cold weather in the winter of1895. It is indeed sad that this goodSamaritan among birds should bedefenseless against the severity ofNature, the common mother of us all.Nevertheless the return of the birds,in myriads or in single pairs, willbe welcomed more and more, year byyear, as intelligent love and apprecia-tion of them shall possess the popularmind.

THE BLACK TERN, (5 HE TERN, says Mr. F. M.Woodruff, of the ChicagoAcademy of Sciences, isthe only representative ofthe long-winged swimmers whichcommonly nests with us on ourinland fresh water marshes, arrivingearly in May in its brooding plumageof sooty black. The color changesin the autumn to white, and a numberof the adult birds may be found, inthe latter part of July, dotted andstreaked here and there with white.On the first of June, 1891, I found alarge colony of Black Terns nestingon Hyde Lake, Cook County, Illinois.As I approached the marsh a fewbirds were seen flying high in the air,and as I neared the nesting site, theflying birds gave notes of alarm, andpresently the air was filled with thegraceful forms of this beautiful littlebird. They circled about me, dartingdown to within a few feet of my head,constantly uttering a harsh, screamingcry. As the eggs are laid upon thebare ground, which the brownish andblackish markings so closely resemble,I was at first unable to find the
