PARADISE. My home is on an islandwhere it is very warm. I flyamong the tall trees and eatfruit and insects. See my beautiful feathers.The ladies like to wear them intheir hats. The feathers of my wife arebrown, but she has no long tailfeathers. My wife thinks my plumesare very beautiful. When we have a party, we gowith our wives to a tall tree.We spread our beautiful plumeswhile our wives sit and watchus. Sometimes a man finds ourtree and builds a hut among thelower branches. He hides in the hut and whilewe are spreading our feathersshoots at us. The arrows are not sharp.They do not draw blood. When they dry the skins theytake off the feet and wings.This is why people used to thinkwe had neither feet nor wings. They also thought we livedon the clews of heaven and thehoney of flowers. This is whywe are called the Birds ofParadise. Upon its waving feathers poised in air,Feathers, or rather clouds of golden down,With streamers thrown luxuriantly outIn all the wantonness of winged wealth.
