below with grey; back, inner upper wing-coverts, innermost secondaries, and scapulars grey-brown; passing into leaden grey on outer upper wing-coverts; lower back and rump grey-brown along the middle, leaden grey on the sides; upper tail-coverts grey-brown; middle of abdomen buffy white; under tail coverts white; primary-coverts and quills blackish, with pale narrow edges; under wing- coverts leaden grey; central tail feathers brown-grey; the lateral ones black on the basal half; the terminal half it white on the outer feathers. grey on the inner ones; tail underneath black on the basal half, white on the terminal one, the outer feathers have the outer web white; iris brown, bill black; legs pinkish-red. Total length 10.5 inches, wing 6, tail 4.6 bill 0.55, tarsus 0.85. Female. — Similar to the male. Young. — Duller and with pale edges to the feathers of the upper parts. Habitat. — Cape Colony, extending into Natal and Southern Transvaal. Brit. Mns. Cat. Vo! 21., pp 425-6To be continued.

^Vll flights 5\c5<irvc6. November, 1922 BIRD NOTES: — THE —JOURNAL OF THE FOREIGN BIRD CLUB Quail Finches, (Ortygospiza polyzona). Bv Capt. Ci. E. Rattigax, F.Z.S. So far as I am aware there has been no instance of the successful breeding of Quail finches since they were bred for the first time on record by that extremely clever aviculturist, Mr. Reginald Phillipps. At all events, no record of such an event, if it occurred, appears to have been published. A very delightful account of Mr. Phillipps success appears, from his pen in the Avicultural Magazine of May 1908. Third Series,\^ol. I., page 2)7- to which I would refer my readers. My own experience with these charming little birds differed in some respects from that of Mr. Phillipps. The Quail Finch is unlike most of the mannikins, in which family it is, rather unhappily I think, included. (Note.—I say unhappily because it certainly does not resemble the mannikins either in appearance or habits, and it is anything but dull and
