Text Appearing Before Image:
y birthday and seasonable gifts of such booksas then existed dealing with bird-keeping and money to h_lpin my projects—with the writer his fancy has never waveredand his zeal is as keen, perhaps keener than it was overforty years ago—fhere now, I have let the cat out oT thebag, well it does not matter, theres nothing to be ashamedabout in that fact. Rightly or wrongly I do not propose to make anearlier beginning than for those who are well into theirteens, and who are fairly handy with saw, hammer cUidchisel, willing to do a little thinking for themselves, and availthemselves of any help that comes their way. To clear theway and save words I will here remark that all my earlieraviarie^ were self erected, aided by the help of parents andother &i the family—for those very fortiinatelv placed alittle of one oest behaviour and the denying ones-self of thepleasure of youthful pranks, will secure much valuable helpfrom gardener, os .er, etc., enough! (To be continued). Bird Notes.

Photo W. Shore Baihi. Nest and Eggs of Black-breasted Mexican Qu&il. All rig/iti reserved. February, 1917. BIRD NOTES: THE — JOURNAL OF THE FOREIGN BIRD CLUB. Nesting of the Blach-breasted Mexican Quail. By Wm. Shore Baily. In the Spring of 1913 I bought two pairs of this in-teresting species from Fockelmann, hoping to have success inbreedii^g them in one !of my aviaries. Although, from time totime, they have built rather neat little nests in various partsof their enclosure, this (1916) is the first year that either pairhas actually nested, and I regret very much to have to recorda failure in this case also. CoLinus (Oriyx) pectoralis, the Black-breasted Mexican,Colin or Quail, very closely resembles its near relatives, thecommon Bob-White (C. virginianus), and the more fre-quently imported Cuban Quail (C. cubanensis). Accordingto Ridgway there are no less than nine species of CoUnusfound in N. America; in addition to these nine other kinds ofCrested Quail are also found there,
