or, to briefly discuss the species. Having some time ago purchased one, and not being quite sure of its identity, I wrote to Dr. Butler on the subject and with his help was able to find out more about this natty Mynah, which certainly deserves to be better known as a cage bird. It is not a bird of brilliant plumage, but thecolours are delicate and the contrast is exceedinglypleasing, and if in health it is a model of neatnessand cleanliness. The song may be described as a mixture of thegood and the bad, and is as surprising as it is comical.Whilst singing, the bird puffs out its ragged plumageand raises the crest, at the same time lifting the headslightly. A few harsh calls are heard, immediatelyfollowed by several mellow whistling notes that wouldput in the shade the average Blackbird, then thebroken song of a young Thrush is gone through,terminated by inward chuckles. The ordinarycall note consists of a quiet cherrukk, and whenalarmed it calls out not unlike a Jay, of course not insuch a loud tone. In size the bird is similar to the Redwing Thrush,and, having an example before me, I will roughlydescribe the colouration : Bill at the gape and basecobalt blue, at the nostrils greenish, remainderyellow. The parts usually described as the legs andtoes yellow, claws strong and whitish. Eye sharp andpiercing, the iris being silvery white, and a bare spaceis situated immediately behind the eye, being morevisible at one time than another.
