It wasthe intention of these two men to camp on the island until the colony shouldbecome ripe, and then kill the birds for the sake of their plumes. By ripe,in the parlance of the Florida plume-hunter, is meant the time of the seasonwhen the eggs have hatched, because then the old Egrets will refuse to abandonthe rookery, even if they see their companions shot down all around them.Just before these two men were ready for their shooting three other plume-hunters came in and chased them away. The newcomers then proceeded toshoot up the rookery, after which they cut down the bushes, piled them upand burned them, with the result that what last year was the most populousEgret rookery in Florida is now as desolate as a Belgian village. Six hundreddollars would have saved the colony. The largest Herring Gull colony on the coast of Maine for some time hasbeen the 30-acre island of No-Mans-Land. Last year it came into possession

In the end the son of the owner was appointed war-den. Later, reports came that the birds were being interfered with, andArthur H. Norton, our agent in Maine, was asked personally to investigate thesituation. He reported there was much evidence to show that the Gulls hadbeen continually robbed of their eggs, and also that foxes had been liberatedon the island. He found the colony broken up and the birds all gone. Thefaithless warden was called to account, and his resignation was accepted.
