The funds that theNational Association of Audubon Socie-ties have expended in the laudable andhighly humane effort of saving the Egretsin Florida are not furnished by the peopleof Florida. I can count on the fingers ofone hand the names of all the men andwomen in that state who contribute adollar to this work. And so we cannotlook there for the sinews of war for ourEgret campaign in 1916, but, as usual,must turn to the New England school-teacher, the New York business-man, andothers of our friends who dwell north of thePotomac River. 62 Bird - Lore Carolina, North Carolina and Louisiana,but as for getting any assistance fromFlorida—No. The office of State Game-Warden wasestablished in Florida by law in 1913, butthe warden was unwise enough to prose-cute some persons for violations of thelaw, and these and their friends at oncewent for his political life. The result wasthat when the legislature of 1915 assembledit destroyed the office. No protests weremade, as far as I am aware, while the billwas pending, except from the FloridaAudubon Society, and no one went to thecapital city to argue the cause of the birdsexcept one Florida attorney, who was hired by the National Association ofAudubon Societies for that purpose. The more striking forms of Floridasbird-life are all but swept away, hermagnificent pine-forests have been utterlydestroyed for lumber and turpentine, andnow the lakes are being cleared of fishby a highly efficient and diabolical formof trap.
