Hoping to study the home-life ofthis bird, I cut a few branches and built a partial shelter about twenty feetaway; but disappointm_ent awaited m_e, for when I came back at two in theafternoon and again at five, the Grebe had not returned.

CARRYING OFF THE EGG-SHELL Two days later found me again at the pond, bent upon studying the oldbirds with their young and making another trial upon the incubating bird. 1arrived about seven a.m., but a careful survey of the whole surface failed toreveal any of the Grebes. Neither was the second bird upon the nest, thoughthe warmth of the eggs attested her recent departure. Securing a boat, 1drifted about the pond, searching the edge of the rushes, and soon was rewardedby a movement a hundred yards or so below the first nest.
