Grouse, Pas-senger Pigeon, Paroquet, and Ivory-billed Woodpecker; among the former theAmerican and Snowy Egrets, Whoopingand Sandhill Cranes, Long-billed Curlew,Golden Plover, Prairie Hen and Osprey. It is to be regretted that, in so authori-tative a publication as Mr. Howells, theA. O. U. Check-List is not followed moreclosely. Uniformity is here of far moreimportance than the use or omission of anapostrophe, or the inclusion of races notrecognized by the A. O. U. Committee;while the adoption only in part of moderntrinomialism results in a hybrid type ofnomenclature. Jimco hyemalis, for exam-ple, according to current usage, is not thename of the Slate-colored Junco, anymore than it is the name of any of theother nine forms which collectively makeJunco hyemalis; and the mere fact thatonly one of these forms is known fromArkansas does not seem to warrant theuse of a binomial for it, any more than itwould warrant us in listing the speciesfollowing the Junco (on p. 65) as Peucceabachmam.

312 Bird - Lore The method approved by the A. O. U inits last Check-List, and indeed byadvanced systematists generally, whilecumbersome, is logical; but its truesignificance is lost if it be not employedconsistently.—F. M. C. Woodpeckers in Relation to TreesAND Wood Products. By W. L. Mc-Atee. Bull. No. 39, Biological Survey,September 26, 1911; 100 pp.; xii plls.;44 text cuts. This paper is an admirable expositionof modern methods of research in eco-nomic ornithology. It contains a vastamount of data, with pertinent illustra-tions, and the conclusions reached seemto be based on an impartial consider-ation of the evidence presented. Woodpeckers, other than Sapsuckers, have been found to injure trees, telephoneand telegraph poles, and wooden buildingsto a small extent. To minimize this dam-age, Mr. McAtee recommends the trialof nesting-boxes (like the Berlepsch boxes)especially designed for Woodpeckers, since, on the whole, these birds are chieflybeneficial. Sapsuckers (genus Sphyrapicu
