WILLIAM WATSON WOOLLEN William Watson Woollen is a true pio-neer of Indiana, having been born May28, 1838, in the city of Indianapolis. Inhis childhood, his father moved with hisfamily to a farm northeast of the city.Excellent opportunity for nature studywas presented to him, for the family livedin a double log-cabin in the midst of theIndiana forest, which was teeming withwild game. His study at this time wasnot from books, but was from first-handobservation. Having received suchlittle schooling as he could get from thissource, at the age of nineteen Mr. Woollenentered the Northwestern Christian Uni-versity, now Butler College. During theyears he spent here, he earned his way byteaching country school and doing occa-sional farming. He graduated from thelaw department a few years later andbegan the practice of law in Indianapolis.For nearly fifty years he has been con- Indianapolis itself.
