f them will commence to call names. What they say does not seem to meat all objectionable. It sounds very much like Chickadee, chickadee, but Ihave learned that when said in a certain way with the accent on chickit is always the signal for a regular pitched battle. The father bird often comes when the young birds are eating, but healways sends them off in a hurry. Evidently he has no intention of sharinghis food with any of his offspring. One of the young birds sometimessleeps in the piazza screen when it is rolled up for the night. The photo-graph shows one of the young birds eating. As they were rather shy of thecamera, we did not succeed in getting the two together. *Chickedees are apparently not to be distinguished sexually by their notes, both sexesLittering the Phoebe call; and the fact that among birds the female parent is usually themore solicitous for the safety of the young, prompts the suggestion that our correspondentis possibly in error in this determination of sex.—Ed.
Text Appearing After Image:
The Dipper in Colorado By EVAN LEWIS IN 1891 I found on Bear Creek seven nests of the Dipper within a littleover a mile of the canon. All were placed where they could be reachedonly by long ladders or ropes. The creek was high and dangerous, so allnests were supposed to be perfectly safe; and, as this was May 30, the youngbirds should have been flying in a few days. In 1894 I again went up Bear Creek Canon, but not an Ouzel or nestwas to be seen where they were quite numerous three years before.
