00 there hved close by, on the clififs overlooking GraysFerry, Dr. Benjamin Say, whose little son Thomas, then a boy of thirteen,and later a naturalist of note, carried to Bartram all the curious specimensthat he chanced to find on his rambles. Dr. B. S. Barton, the young pro-fessor of botany at the University of Pennsylvania, also came to him forassistance; while up at Milestown, a short distance north of the city, liveda young Scotch schoolmaster, Alexander Wilson by name, who was thenabout to take the school at Grays Ferry, and to make the acquaintance ofBartram, under whose guidance he was soon to become one of the mostfamous ornithologists that our country has ever produced. In the development of all these men, and in others as well, much is tobe attributed to the influence of William Bartram; and, when we form ourjudgment of his worth, we must look, as in the case of other modest men,beyond the work which he accomplished himself and consider also thatwhich he inspired in others.
