HORNED LARK POSES founded only the summer beforeaway from the mountains. After the first of March the weather moderated, and the Larks, all ofwhich appeared to be Desert Horned Larks, began to disappear, going outon the plains again. The Christmas Bird Census BIRD-LORES Fourth Christmas Bird Census was even more suc-cessful than any of the three which have preceded it. This fact isbest expressed by a statement of the number of reports received eachyear since the Census was inaugurated. Thus, in 1900 twenty-five re-ports were sent in, in 1901, thirty-four, in 1902, fifty-three, and in 1903,seventy-eight. The area covered extends from Ontario, Vermont, New Hampshire,Michigan and Wisconsin, south to Florida and Texas, west to Californiaand Washington ; and the Census is interesting, not alone from the numberof reports made, but also because of the rather unusual character of theircontents.
