YEATTER: BIRD DOGS IN SPORT AND CONSERVATION 15 is still and moist, the "smoke" spreads out in all directions, but lies close to the ground. If a quail, for example, is flushed, it flies away swiftly, leav- ing an air-borne "smoke trail" behind it, which terminates where the quail alights and crouches. The bird can be located easily by the bird dog that arrives before the "smoke trail" is dissipated. If the bird remains motionless for some time, the trail of scent disappears and its "body scent" is largely withheld by the tightly compressed feathers. Then the dog will probably have difficulty in finding the bird. The scenting ability of the dog and scent emission by game are affected by a number of conditions that are only partially understood. It remains something of a mystery why dogs with keen scenting powers can sometimes locate game birds with ease and at other times fail to find them. Doubtless the conflicting odors given off by moldy vegetation, the different degrees of moisture and temperature of the air and soil, the physical condi- tion of the dog, and other factors play an important part.
