The best a Verdin can dofor self-protection is to make her home looklike a little bundle of drift, roof the housowith thorns, and make the doorway on theunder side. This bird, which I took to be the fe-male, had a morsel in her bill. She hoppedinto the house and was quickly out againand off on the hunt, pajdng no attentionto us. We sat down about fifteen feetaway. In a few moments the male Verdincame headlong with a mouthful of greenmeasuring-worms. He brought up with asurprised jerk and fidgeted as if he didntknow just what to do. He was evidentlysaying to himself, Who are they? Whatdo they want? He came to the conclu-sion he would fool us, so he swallowed thebit and went hunting through an adjoiningbush to show us that he was merely skir-mishing to appease his own appetite, andthat he had neither nest nor children.
