(217) 278 Bird - Lore see. Williams chanced to be away but.\llen and a boatman went in pursuit ofthe plume-hunters, whereupon the raiderscommenced firing on them. They returned to the shore, and Allen,securing a rifle, crawled through theswamp to a commanding position andreturned the fire with about twelve shotsbefore the plume-hunters left the rookery. Seven Egrets and one Snowy Egrethad been killed and the men had securedthe plumes from five of the dead birds,but in their haste to depart left theSnowy Egret and two of the large Egretswith the plumes still unstripped. Three brothers, by the name of Whid-den, have been arrested, and AssistantWarden .\llen has positively identifiedHaynor Whidden as one of those doing theshooting. The arrest of the fourth man isconfidently expected, and trial of the of-fenders will be held at the September termof the Circuit Court of Alachua County.
