Text Appearing Before Image:
ecent cable dispatch the Minister ofAgriculture of Belgium has instructed thatberry-bearing trees in the government for-ests shall remain untrimrned until the endof winter in order to allow the birds plentyof food. Hitherto they have been trimmedin October. It is not generally known how-much birds contribute to the sanitary con-dition of the world; in fact, it has oftenbeen said that man could not live upon theearth were it not for the birds. Besidesbeing a perennial delight to lovers of nature, the existence of bird-life is a necessity forthe health of the people. During the pastseason, on some of our outings, we havenoted more birds than for many previousyears. American people better understandat the present time the need of the preserva-tion of birds; but there is much still to belearned. Every sportsman should assumehis share of the work in protecting ourbirds.—ShootiniT ami Fishing. Note.—A report from the Florida Audu-bon Society is of necessity postponed untilour next issue.

As an indication of one of these many possible vicissitudes inthe life of a bird, I take pleasure in acceding to the editors request that 1write a brief report of the deadly effect upon bird life of an unusuallysevere hail-storm, accompanied by a very high wind, which occurred inMinneapolis during the summer of igoi.
