A few of our birds cannot adaptthemselves to life in a thickly settled andcultivated country, but this list is a shortone. Most of them, including most of thegame birds and water birds, could andwould, if they were given a chance, adapttheir mode of life to the changed conditionsdue to mans occupation of the country.They are disappearing through our faultand neglect and for no other reasons. There are few more promising ways ofmaking amends for our past mistakes thanby the establishment of such preserves asthe one just described. The towns are enshrouded in trop-ical foliage, which offers inviting homes to birds, but the greeneryharbors no avian life, save the Mynah and the little Rice Bird, bothintroduced species. Moreover, the harbors and coast line of Hawaii are,for the most part, almost as barren of native bird-life as the towns.
