Description |
English: Bird's eye view maps of cities and towns had their heyday in the U.S. and Canada in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Lithographer Henry Wellge (1850-1917) is one of only five men who produced more than half of the known panoramic maps from this period. Born in Germany, Mr. Wellge immigrated in 1871 to the Milwaukee area and worked prolifically, creating more than 150 city views in twenty-six states and the Province of Quebec. Initially he worked for Joseph J. Stoner, a publisher in Madison, but by 1886, he had formed his own company, Henry Wellge and Company (later American Publishing Company). The bird's eye view panoramic map pictured here was created by Henry Wellge, one of several drawings he made in Washington State in an attempt by the publisher to increase the popularity of panoramas in the West.
