Summary
[edit]DescriptionBird's-nest Orchid (Neottia nidus-avis) - geograph.org.uk - 1341061.jpg |
English: Bird's-nest Orchid (Neottia nidus-avis). Detail of a solitary plant caught (unusually) in a patch of sunlight in otherwise shady woodland (see 1341060 for wider shot and 1341050 for another one nearby). This species is saprophytic, feeding on leaf litter in deep shade, and therefore has no need for chlorophyll, hence the lack of any green colour. The name "birds nest" refers to the shape of the roots. |
