Birch bark

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Birch bark There are many silver birch trees on this part of West Heath: they thrive in the acid soil. Birch bark has been used since very early times as a form of parchment in Northern Europe and in North America. Surviving birch bark documents found in the excavations of ancient Novgorod, for example, have given archaeologists a very full picture of what life was like there in mediaeval times.
