Summary

[edit]
Description

Each year, the Toes in the Toe Discovery program brings nearly every 5th grade student in North Carolina’s Yancey and Mitchell counties out to a river in their community - Mitchell County students visit the North Toe River, while Yancey County students visit the South Toe River. The students rotate through a number of stations, including collecting stream invertebrates, discussing watershed health, and exploring rivers through art. Organized by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Toe River Valley Watch, the event draws the support of many community partners, including RiverLink, the N.C. Division of Water Quality, N.C. Natural Heritage Program, Sundance Solar, Penland School of Crafts, N.C. Cooperative Extension, the Blue Ridge Resource Conservation and Development Commission, Mountain Heritage High School, Mitchell County High School, Tri-County Christian School, Yancey County, Mitchell County, and many community volunteers.
