be said to be itsbody, and its material activities itsblood, so patriotism may be said to bethe vital breath of a nation. When pa-triotism dies the nation dies, and its re-sources as well as its territory go toother peoples with stronger vitality. Patriotism can in no way be moreeffectively cultivated than by studyingand commemorating the achievementsand virtues of our great men—the menwho have lived and died for the nation, who have advanced its prosperity, in-creased its power, added to its glory. Inour brief history the United States canboast of many great men, and theachievement by Its sous of many greatdeeds; and if we accord the first rank toWashington as founder, so we must un-hesitatingly give to Lincoln second placeas preserver and regenerator of Amerl-can liberty. So far, however, from beingopposed to subordinating either to theother, the popular heart has alreadycanonized these two as twin heroes litour national pantheon, as twin stars Inthe firmament of our national fame.
