the two men was atthe State Fair (in October), before a vast mul-titude. Lincolns speech on this occasion wasregarded the ablest effort of this campaign.Its keynote is in the following passage: Mydistinguished friend says it is an insult to theemigrants to Kansas and Nebraska to supposethey are not able to govern themselves. Wemust not slur over an argument of this kindbecause it happens to tickle the ear. It mustbe met and answered. I admit that the emi-grant to Kansas and Nebraska is competent togovern himself, but I deny his right to governany other person without that persons consent.The second meeting of the two champions wasin Peoria, and after Lincoln had finished, Doug-las (as a hearer remarked) hadnt much tosay.* Thereafter the Little Giant* kept outof the way of his antagonist. Through Lin-colns influence Lyman Trumbull, the candidateof the anti-Nebraska (afterward Republican)party, was elected LTnited States Senator. Thesame year Lincoln declined the nomination forgovernor.

LINCOLN In the first Republican National Convention,held at Philadelphia in 1856, Lincoln received 110votes for the vice-presidency on the ticket withJohn C. Fremont. When the choice of the con-vention fell upon Fremont and Dayton as thestandard-bearers of the new party, Lincoln en-tered earnestly into the campaign. His nameheaded the electoral ticket of Illinois. In thoseyears Lincoln had a great reputation as a cam-paign speaker, and was a tower of strength tohis parly. The common people recognized himas a diamond in the rough and he was admiredand trusted even by his enemies. His speecheswere masterly and held his audiences spell-bound. No other orator of the period couldequal him in the rare combination of wit, argu-ment, and dramatic power.
