At the NationalRepublican Convention, which met at Chicagoin June 1864, Lincoln was renominated on thefirst ballot; Andrew Johnson, of Tennessee, wasnominated vice-president. The overwhelmingmajority for Lincoln on election day showedconclusively that the people were with him. Hissecond inaugural (4 March 1865) justly ranksas the greatest of his public utterances. Thewar was all but ended, there being one morebattle, Five Forks (1 April), before Lees sur-render at Appomattox (9 April). The rejoicingof the nation was suddenly turned to mourningwhen the President was shot in Fords Theatre,Washington, on the evening of 14 April, by JohnWilkes Booth. He lingered unconscious anddied the next morning. His remains, after lyingin state in the Capitol, were borne to Spring-field and there buried (4 May). His tragic endas well as his public services had gained him aplace in the hearts of his countrymen not secondto that of Washington, ahd in the estimation of
