ol. Full of resources, and possessing a very large stock ofperseverance, he gained his education by virtue of industry andself-denial. An insatiable love of knowledge urged him on fromround to round, up the ladder that led to the heights of knowledge.In the young mans quest for the best, Horace Mann, the famouseducator, exercised a strong and beneficial influence. A strong religious inclination from early boyhood was the de-termining factor in Mr. Sallaways choice of a profession. InJanuary, 1863, he was ordained as minister of the First ParishUnitarian Church at Billerica, Massachusetts, where he remaineduntil the end of October, 1864. He was amember of the Cambridge Association of Unitarian Ministers, ofthe Ministerial Union (Unitarian), and of the Ministers Monday-Club (Unitarian). He also served on the school committees inseveral places where he was located, as well as on the library com-mittees. He was an ardent supporter of the temperance cause.After retiring from active service he escaped the severity of north-ern winters by going to Florida, while the summers were spentamong the mountains of New Hampshire. Mr. Sallaway had the pleasure of two trips to Europe, one ofwhich included a journey to the Holy Land. In the leisure that came after his retirement, Mr. Sallawaystudied the Italian language, and then took up Dante, making agood literal translation of the Divina Commedia. Because offailing eyesight, he purchased, two months before his death, a copyof the poems in huge print, and illustrated by Gustav Dore\
