Senior staff scientist John F. Cipollo, Ph.D., and analytical chemist Yanming An, Ph.D., use mass spectrometry technology to analyze glycoconjugates— carbohydrates bonded to either a fat molecule or a protein. They’ve proven valuable in vaccines used to treat meningitis, pneumonia and blood infections. The scientists hope to discover molecules that will lead to the development of new vaccines. Scientists at FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) work to facilitate the development of safe, effective treatments that would neutralize biological threats to public health and security. CBER regulates preventive and therapeutic vaccines, blood and blood products, human cell and tissue-based products, gene therapies and xenotransplantation.
