Summary
[edit]DescriptionBillings Park and former Central Technical High School, Syracuse, New York - 20211203.jpg |
English: As seen in downtown Syracuse, New York in December 2021, the triangular Billings Park (bounded by South Salina, East Adams, and South Warren Streets) makes a pint-sized but pleasantly verdant foreground to the majestic former Central Technical High School, a 1903 masterwork by architect Archimedes Russell. An example of the Italian Renaissance Revival style with almost impossibly ornate Classical detailing, the central feature of this magnificent building is a double round-arched main entrance topped with an elevated temple front with two-story-tall Ionic columns supporting a pediment with a trio of oculus windows and relief carvings in a variety of motifs. The lateral wings feature the trademark Renaissance trope of window treatments that vary by floor: segmental-arched on the ground floor, rectangular on the second, round-arched on the top. Central Tech was in use as a school until 1976 and, despite several reuse proposals that have come and gone, has remained vacant since that time. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, and as of the time this photo was taken, was proposed for reuse as a modern STEAM-focused high school (the acronym signifies Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), an effort that garnered a $71.4 million infusion of state money in January of 2020. |
