English: Portrait of a knight of the Order of Saint Hubert, thought to be Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine (1658-1716) or Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria (1662-1726).
Deutsch: Bildnis eines Fürsten mit dem wittelsbachischen St.-Hubertusorden. Möglicherweise Kurfürst Johann Wilhelm I von der Pfalz (1658-1716).
"Halbbildnis nach rechts. Der Herr in gepuderter Allongeperücke, über dem Harnisch die Kollane mit Stern vom Orden des Heiligen Hubertus (Hubertusorden). Rechts im Hintergrund auf einem Podest der Kurfürstenhut abgelegt. Die Identität des Dargestellten eindeutig gesichert. Der Hubertus-Ritterorden wurde 1444 von Herzog Gerhard II von Jülich-Berg gestiftet und hauptsächlich an führende Herrscherhäuser von Jülich-Berg, Pfalz und Bayern verliehen. Noch heute als Hausorden der Wittelsbacher verstanden. 1708 rief Kurfürst Johann Wilhelm II von der Pfalz-Neuburg, Herzog von Jülich-Berg den Orden wieder ins Leben zurück. Damit kommen nur wenige Herrscher in den Kreis der Mitglieder für die Zeit der Entstehung des Bildes in Frage. Möglicherweise handelt es sich hier um Johann Wilhelm I von der Pfalz-Neuburg (1658 - 1716). Eine genauere Zuordnung ist deshalb schwierig, da das sog. Hubertusbuch 1945 auf Kloster Merten verbrannte, in dem sämtliche Mitglieder des rheinischen und bayerischen Adels verzeichnet waren. (940091)". [1]
