um 1790. Bildnis Prinz Friedrich Josias von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld mit Medaille. Öl auf Leinwand, auf Holzplatte aufgezogen. 58,5 x 45 cm. Da er als vierter Sohn des Herzogs von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld nicht die Thronfolge antreten konnte, war Prinz Friedrich Josias von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld (1737-1815) schon früh für eine Karriere im Militär prädestiniert. Als Offizier der österreichischen Armee nahm er sowohl am siebenjährigen Krieg, dem Koalitionskrieg gegen Frankreich als auch dem Türkenkrieg von 1788 bis 1791 teil. Dort befehligte er das galizische Armeekorps und erlangte zusammen mit dem russischen General Suworow am 4. August 1789 einen entscheidenden Sieg bei Focșani, der schließlich die Einnahme von Bukarest und die Beendigung des Krieges ermöglichte. Die zeitgenössische Bedeutung der Schlacht bei Focșani war so groß, dass Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ihm den Contretanz „Der Sieg vom Helden Coburg“ widmete (KV 587). Entsprechend präsentiert der Prinz auf vorliegendem Gemälde, obgleich er bescheiden auf jeglichen Hinweis auf seinen militärischen Rang verzichtet, stolz lediglich die Medaille, die ihm zu Ehren anlässlich des Sieges über die Türken bei Focșani 1789 geprägt wurde. |
