Summary
[edit]DescriptionBike-tilting and steering 3.svg |
English: Top view of a front wheel of a bike (with trail and rake). The whole bike is tilted to the right and steering is also turned to the right. Assumed the bike is a bicycle, drives at a sufficient speed and is steered hands-off, then the steering wheel assembly tends to turn right too, so the bike also steers to the right. O, front wheel ground contact point, is still on the edge of the tire, not at the center. It is 'pulled' from X, the steering axis ground contact point. O tends to follow, and moves right behind X, turning the whole wheel assembly. This is the effect of mass distribution (leaning) and trail, not mentioning the stabilizing gyroscopic effect and others.
