Summary

[edit]
Description

Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep thrive in the meadows, forests, and alpine tundra of Great Sand Dunes National Preserve. They are most often seen by visitors along the Medano Pass Primitive Road, which ascends to 10,000 feet (3,048 m). This forested canyon provides all the habitat needs of these sheep, including rocky crags to climb away from predators, and mineral licks for extra nutrition. The bighorn ram's namesake horns are used to battle other males for females. Fortunately, there is a natural cushioning design in their head and neck that helps prevent more serious damage during battles.
