Description |
English: Two mature trees stand prominently on the side of a bare, grassy slope. Big Hole National Battlefield Site. The twin trees were two large fir trees high on a slope above the river. At the time of the battle, they stood out for their size and their isolation from the surrounding forest. From here, a Nez Perce sharpshooter fired on soldiers as they retreated toward the siege area. The twin trees is one of the few instances of vegetation existing at the site today that was present at the time of the battle. However, the integrity of the battle landscape depends not on individual historic features, but on the overall patterns, processes, and organization of the landscape.
