e Washington, in the employ of Lord Fairfax, was on theupper Potomac in 1750, and April 25th of that year, Surveyed for Friend Cox,a certain tract of wast Ld Situate in Frederick Coty and on Potomac & LittleCapaphon & bounded as follo-weth : a tract containing 240 acres.—See A Book ofSurveys begun July 22, 1749, printed in Toners edition of WashingtonsJournal while surveying for Lord Faisfax in the Northern Neck of Virginiabeyond the Blue Ridge. p.. 111. 7. The army struck the Little Cacapehon (though pronounced Cacapon. Ihave used for the occasion the spelling of Washington, and various old docu-ments,) about six miles above its mouth, and following the stream, encampedon the Virginia side of the potomac, preparatory to crossing into Maryland.The water is supposed to have been high at this time, as the spot is known as=Ferrv Fields, from the army havng been ferried over.—See Loudermilks His-tory of Cumberland, Washingtons First Campaign, and Braddocks Expedi-tion, p. 141.

Sketch Showing by Dotted Line the Route Pursued by Braddocks Army Through the Eastern Pan-Handle of West Virginia. The Army crossed the Potomac from Maryland into Virginia, at Evan Watkins Ferry, which had been established by an Act of the Vir-ginia House of Burgesses, October 9, 1744—eleven years before—at the mouth of Conococheaque Creek. Thence it proceeded up the easternside of the Opequon river by the pioneer home of John Evans; thence to that of the widow Barringer: thence to that of one Potts; thence toHenry Enocks, in the Forks of Capon; and thence to that of Friend Cox, at the mouth of Little Cacapon river; where, at the Ferry Fieldsit recrossed the Potomac into Maryland, and Dressed on to Fort Cumberland—now Cumberland Citv. in Western Maryland.—V.
