Venner-Brunnen von 1546 im Ring in Biel |
||
Description |
English: The year 1546 is found on the fountain's base. A master HS, perhaps Hans Singisen, made the column. In 1557, the stonemason Michel Wumard created the figure of the Venner. The standard bearer, depicted in full armour with sword and Biel flag, was the commander of the Biel troops in the Middle Ages. He kept the key to the armoury. He embodied the town's fortitude and power. Banner bearers as fountain figures were popular motifs in towns at that time. |
