English: Dharahara, also known as Bhimsen Stamba as it was built by the fierce Rana prime minister Bhimsen Thapa in 1832 A.D. It was built under the instructions of the Queen Tripurasundari.
The tower was nine storey tall .It had spiral staircases with 213 steps leading to small temple of god Shiva on the ninth floor.All the tiredness from climbing two hundred plus stairs would vanish reaching the 8th floor where there was a circular balcony. There you could observe city of temples ,Kathmandu in panoramic view. The tower also has a 5.2m long bronze mast on the roof.It was a World Heritage Site a landmark, selected by UNESCO. |
