Description

Beverley Railway station, c.1910. Beverley Railway station was opened in October 1846 by the York and North Midland Railway leased Bridlington branch of the Hull and Selby Railway. The original station was designed by G.T. Andrews, and this image shows the building with its original canopy. The first passenger train ran from York to Market Weighton on 3 October, 1847. However, the railway stopped there and it was 17 years before the rest of the line from Market Weighton to Beverley was completed. Lord Hotham who owned much of the farmland between Market Weighton and Beverley, finally agreed to have the railway built across his estate on the Yorkshire wolds, providing he had his own personal station at Kiplingcoates and that no trains ran through on Sundays. The first through train ran from Hull to York on the 1st May, 1865. Note the amount of horse drawn carriages waiting outside to take visitors onto their further destinations and the fact that they outnumber the one car parked on its own. The York to Beverley line closed on 29 November, 1965, as a result of Dr.Beeching’s closure of the railways. The railway station received listed building status in 1985.
